Industrial scales for warehouse, production & shipping

Reliable in everyday use – for goods receipt, shipping, inventory & quality approval

A good weighing result is sometimes just a number. In practice, however, it is often the starting point for goods receipt, shipping, inventory or quality approval.

Our industrial scales (also: industrial scale, industrial weighing scale, scales for industry) are built to work reliably in everyday use – despite recurring loads, harsh environments and changing operators.

Buying industrial scales: finding the right scale for your process

Industrial scales are used wherever weights need to be regularly measured, checked, documented, or processed.

The key factor is therefore the combination of design, load capacity, readability, weighing surface, operating environment and the required documentation.

In this category, you will find industrial scales for light checkweighing as well as for heavy loads, pallets, containers, roll containers, suspended loads or vehicles. The range extends from compact benchtop and platform scales to floor scales, pallet scales, crane scales, pallet trucks with scales and vehicle scales.

Key selection criteria at a glance

  • Weighing range and capacity suitable for the minimum load, standard load and maximum peak load
  • Readability or resolution to meet the required accuracy in the process
  • Weighing surface and design suitable for packages, containers, pallets or vehicles
  • Verification, verifiability and ISO or DAkkS calibration for documentation and quality assurance
  • Protection rating and material, for example stainless steel, IP65, IP68 or IP69K depending on the environment
  • Interfaces such as RS-232, USB, Ethernet, Wi-Fi or Bluetooth for PC, printer, ERP or WMS

Use the filters in this category to narrow down your search for industrial scales by weighing range, resolution, functions, weighing platform, verification/calibration, manufacturer and price. This will help you find the scale more quickly that is technically and economically suited to your application.

The most important difference lies not only in the brand or model, but in how the item being weighed is moved and measured.

  • weighing range/capacity,
  • readability (division/verification interval e),
  • platform or weighing surface size
  • the right version for dust, moisture or wash-down water (e.g. protection class IP65/IP67, materials such as stainless steel).

Connectivity options for PCs, printers, remote displays, etc.

In this category you will find industrial scales for typical industrial processes – from compact solutions for the packing bench to heavy-duty applications for pallets and bulky goods.

In day-to-day practice, these designs often prove their value:

  • Bench scales for compact workstations and fast check weighings.
  • Counting scales for determining piece counts via reference weight – e.g. in assembly, picking and inventory.
  • Platform scales as robust all-rounders for warehouse, production and shipping.

Depending on the application, verified scales and/or verifiable versions are also available – especially relevant when weight is used for invoicing, fees or documentation.

Industrial scales at a glance: Which design fits your application?

Industrial scales are used wherever weights need to be regularly measured, checked, documented, or processed.

Industrial scales differ less by “brand or model” than by the question of how and where weighing takes place: at the packing bench, in goods receiving, at the loading dock, or directly within the transport process. The right design saves time and reduces errors in everyday work – key factors are capacity/weighing range, readability (division/verification interval e), platform or weighing surface size, and environmental conditions (e.g. IP65/IP67, stainless steel). Below, we show which scale types have proven themselves in typical industrial processes and what you should consider when choosing.

Industrial scales at a glance: Which design fits your application?

Who are industrial scales ideal for, and what are they used for?

Industrial scales are suitable wherever weights are recorded regularly, documented, or fed back into processes – as a checkpoint or as a basis for decisions.

Production & Assembly

Check weighings, filling and dosing processes (within the scope of the scale’s functions), recording piece weights, and material issuing. Here, fast operation, stable results, and the right level of accuracy matter.

Warehouse & Logistics

Goods in/goods out, pallet and parcel weighing, internal transfers, and shipping preparation. Depending on the process, robust platform or heavy-duty solutions are required.

Quality Assurance

Weight as an inspection criterion (e.g. completeness), monitoring of inspection equipment, and documentation. Important factors are repeatability and suitable calibration to DAkkS or DIN ISO, or verification.

Trade & Services (B2B)

Wherever weight is the basis for invoicing or proof, legally compliant use plays a central role.

For heavy goods and high loads, the Heavy-duty scales subcategory offers suitable designs such as floor, pallet or drive-through solutions. If weighing needs to be integrated into the workflow on the move (e.g. directly during transport), mobile scales are a practical shortcut in the process. And if weights are recorded in the yard/fleet area (e.g. axle/wheel loads), it’s worth taking a look at vehicle scales.

Who are industrial scales ideal for, and what are they used for?

What should you consider when buying an industrial scale?

To ensure the scale works reliably in your environment, a short practical check is worthwhile. These criteria help with selection:

1) Weighing range, capacity and load profile

Clarify typical loads (standard case) and exceptions (maximum peaks). Plan some reserve without unnecessarily reducing readability. Also check minimum load/maximum load if very light and very heavy goods are weighed on the same scale.

2) Readability, division and the right accuracy

The finer the division, the more sensitive the scale is to environmental influences such as vibrations, drafts, or temperature changes. The key question is: what resolution do you actually need for your process? For legally relevant use, the verification interval (e) must also be considered.

3) Platform or weighing surface size

The load should rest stably and safely. Platforms that are too small can cause tipping moments; platforms that are too large take up floor space and are not automatically “better”. With pallets, the process also matters: for many applications, either floor scales (universal for heavy goods/containers) or pallet scales (often U-shape, quick with a pallet truck) are the most efficient options.

4) Design and ergonomics in the workflow

Bench scale, platform scale or floor scale: choose the design that saves steps. A remote indicator/terminal (stand, wall mount) can be useful if the load blocks visibility. For frequently changing locations or when transport and weighing overlap, mobile systems are especially practical.

5) Environment, material and protection class (IP)

In dusty, humid or regularly cleaned areas, the right protection rating is crucial. Depending on use, look for IP65/IP67 (depending on model) and suitable materials such as stainless steel or easy-to-clean surfaces – especially in hygienic environments.

6) Legal & quality: verified, verifiable, conformity (NAWI/2014/31/EU)

If the weight is used for invoicing, fees, official proof or comparable purposes, you will need a verified scale or a verifiable version depending on the application. Requirements for NAWI and conformity under 2014/31/EU come into play here. If you are unsure, a quick classification based on the use case is worthwhile – this helps avoid wrong purchases and ensures legally compliant processes.

7) Interfaces and data flow (ERP/WMS, label, documentation)

If weights are to be processed automatically, check available interfaces (e.g. RS-232, USB, Ethernet – depending on model). What matters is not only “having an interface”, but how the data is used in the process: weight only or additional information, stable transmission, labeling, or transfer to IT systems such as ERP/WMS.

8) Everyday functions

Tare/zeroing are standard; counting or simple check/limit functions are available depending on the model. The key is: what really saves unnecessary work steps in daily use?

Special requirements in hazardous areas (ATEX)

In potentially explosive environments, special requirements apply to devices, materials, and documentation. If you work in Ex zones, ATEX scales are the right place to start – with appropriately certified versions (depending on model/zone).

Frequently Asked Questions

Frequently asked questions about industrial scales (FAQ) 8

You need a verified scale if the weight is the basis for invoicing, fees, official proof, or comparable purposes in commercial transactions. If you’re unsure, this can usually be clarified quickly based on the specific process (e.g. sale by weight, shipping/freight billing, proof of documentation).

“Verifiable” means that, in a suitable configuration, the scale meets the requirements to be legally verified (e.g. as NAWI under 2014/31/EU, depending on the model). Whether you actually need verification depends on the application.

Calibration determines and documents deviations (e.g. DAkkS or ISO calibration, depending on need). Verification is a legally regulated procedure for certain applications in commercial transactions. You can find more details in the ESSMANN scale service.

For pallets, pallet scales (U-shape), floor scales, or drive-through scales are often used. Which solution fits depends on the workflow: U-shape pallet scale: fast and space-saving when pallets are placed using a pallet truck. Floor scale: universal, stable, also suitable for roll containers. Drive-through scale: efficient when pallets are frequently moved over ramps.

In areas with dust, spray water or regular cleaning, a suitable protection rating is essential. IP65 is often a solid baseline against dust and water jets; IP67 is useful if temporary very high moisture exposure or intensive contact with water can occur (depending on the model). What matters is always the real environment: cleaning method, chemicals, temperature changes and installation location.

The platform should be chosen so the load rests stably and can be positioned without tipping. For pallets, it’s not only dimensions that matter, but also entry height, ramps and space at the workstation. Rule of thumb: size it to the process rather than choosing “too large” if floor space is limited.

Many industrial scales offer RS-232, USB or Ethernet depending on the model (sometimes also Wi-Fi/Bluetooth). The key is what data you want to transfer (weight only or additional info) and how your system imports it (format/protocol, stable connection, and possibly label/printer integration).

For inventory and picking, counting scales/piece counting scales are useful. They work with a reference weight and quickly provide piece counts for uniform parts (e.g. screws, small parts). Relevant factors are appropriate resolution, repeatable results and a stable workstation.
